Sawfly egg deposition extends the insect life cycle and alters hormone and volatile emission profiles

چکیده
Introduction Insect oviposition can enhance plant defenses and decrease quality in response to future feeding damage by hatched larvae. Induced resistance triggered egg deposition its negative effect on insect herbivore performance is known for several annual plants but has been much less studied woody perennials, such as species of the Salicaceae. Here we willow Salix babylonica specialist sawfly Nematus oligospilus impact performance. Methods We measured larval pupa formation evaluated influence phytohormones volatile emission profile. Results showed that reduced neonate growth increased proportion prepupae delayed their transition pupae, thus extending length cocoon phase. Oviposited willows jasmonic acid levels changed profile through enhanced concentrations terpenoids, ( E/E )-α-farnesene, (Z)- E )-β-ocimene. Volatile profiles were characteristic each type (oviposition vs. feeding), no priming was found. Discussion demonstrated could perceive per se a primary factor activating defense signaling via pathway. This induced ultimately determined changes pupation dynamics may affect whole population cycle.

Insect egg deposition induces Pinus sylvestris to attract egg parasitoids.
Plant volatiles released in response to feeding insects are known to attract enemies of the feeding herbivores. In this study, egg deposition by a herbivorous insect was shown to induce a gymnosperm plant to emit volatiles that attract egg parasitoids. Odour from twigs of Pinus sylvestris laden with egg masses of the pine sawfly Diprion pini attracts the eulophid egg parasitoid Chrysonotomyia r...
متن کاملFungal Infection Alters Phosphate Level and Phosphatase Profiles in Arabidopsis
Phosphorus (P), in the form of phosphate ion (Pi), is a vital element contributing in biomolecule structures, metabolic reactions, signaling pathways and energy transfer within the living cells. The objective of the present study was to assess the influence of fungal infection on Pi metabolism in compare to the effects of phosphate stress in Arabidopsis. Quantification of total P contents showe...
متن کاملReduction of ethylene emission from Scots pine elicited by insect egg secretion.
Pinus sylvestris L. is known to activate indirect defence in response to attack by an herbivorous sawfly. Egg deposition by the sawfly Diprion pini L. induces pine to release, three days after egg laying, locally and systemically terpenoid volatiles that attract parasitoids to kill the eggs. The elicitor of the pine's response is located in the sawfly's oviduct secretion enveloping the eggs aft...
متن کاملLife-cycle Feeding Programs for Egg Production
Feeding management of egg laying strains involves both feed formulation. and feeding strategy. Life-cycle programs should be developed at day-of-age and be geared to desired production goals in the layer barn. Manipulation of juvenile growth can be accomplished in relation to these goals, the main parameters being mature body weight and age at sexual maturity. Growth of the immature pullet, esp...
